Jean's Story

"I believe that it's a blessing . . . to have done so well, and I want a chance to give to my community."- Jean, Haiti

Jean's community needs a generous spirit like this wife and mother of five. Because, in a country where even the most basic resources--food, clean water--are so difficult to come by, Jean is a vibrant example of what is possible with self-determination and support from those who care.

Jean is one of most exceptional women participating in Credit with Education—in Haiti or anywhere else! Jean lives in a well-maintained, brightly painted house--and all of her children are thriving. One is a secretary, one is a medical student, another is a schoolteacher, and the youngest two are still at home.

With her first Credit with Education loan, Jean set up a small storefront in her house. She sold matches, soap, toothpaste, oral rehydration solution, and other basics. She was a success story from the start, easily making weekly loan repayments and gaining knowledge and skills for better care and nutrition of her family.

She even volunteered for special training so that she could sell contraceptives to other women in her community. Not only did Jean's household income improve, but she found real satisfaction in spreading the word about the crucial links between family planning, good health, and economic well-being.

Jean's success story is an inspiration for other women in her community. She often tells them that they, too, can gain basic life-saving information once they join Credit with Education.

Together with the small loans that each woman receives, their newly acquired knowledge inspires amazing transformations--from despair to hope, from invisibility to empowerment.
