Segundina's Story

Segundina is from Peru...a country where 3.8 million people live in extreme poverty. Segundina lives in an area that is officially "food-secure," but she says that "food always has to be rationed."

In Segundina's community, hunger is a seasonal problem. Right after the harvest, people tend to have enough to eat, but in the months when the harvest stockpiles have run low (September-February), families routinely go hungry. And, as their nutrition decreases, illness increases, especially in young children.

But Segundina has a reason to hope that this year will be different. In addition to supplementing her family's income through the cow purchased with her micro-loan, Segundina is learning how to manage her business and her loan, keeping her payments punctual and setting aside a little money in savings. Segundina is not only enjoying the pride and dignity that comes with owning her own business, but also her growing status in her community. Women are often asked to work for the community when they reach their sixties or seventies, offering advice on where to invest government aid and grants. With her newfound confidence, Segundina hopes to serve her community in such a role when she reaches that age.

Your generosity in supporting Freedom from Hunger helps provide microfinance loans that not only provide immediate relief to the worldwide hunger crisis, but also provide lasting solutions to families and communities.
