The urgent need to help the chronically
poor was made heartbreakingly clear this year as hurricanes, earthquakes and
the tsunami revealed just how vulnerable poor families are when disaster strikes.
For those living on $1/day or less
-- such as the families served by Freedom from Hunger’s programs -- it
doesn’t take an enormous disaster to plunge them into crisis. Recovery
from a case of malaria, the death of a farm animal, or the annual hungry season
can take years. And sometimes, recovery isn’t possible at all.
Central to Freedom from Hunger's mission is helping families achieve a lasting self-reliance that brings food security and improved incomes as well as accumulation of assets and savings on which to draw in times of crisis.
For us, there is no time
to waste. Malaria happens. Farm animals die. The hungry season is an annual
event. Our most urgent issue: nearly 30,000 children die every day
from totally preventable deaths. These deaths are the consequence
of chronic poverty and hunger-and just because they happen every day doesn't
mean they're less of a disaster for families, communities and nations.
Freedom from Hunger has
proven through rigorous impact studies that its innovative and sustainable programs
are effective. Our goal now is to see that more people have access to our microcredit
programs and lifeskills training as well as linkages to local resources (such
as medical clinics).
We have just announced:
Reach for Three Million, our plan to extend our reach from just over 370,000
women to more than three million women by 2010. We are looking for partners
to help our plan succeed. In the coming months, we will share more about opportunities
for corporate involvement, special events to raise awareness, directed donations
to the achievement of our plan, and volunteer opportunities.
So as the images
of the recent events fade, please remember those who live on the brink of disaster
everyday. Help lay the foundation for a more secure life through economic self-sufficiency
and an end to hunger. Please
donate now.
