Freedom from Hunger Celebrates 60 Years Fighting Global Hunger

Events planned to raise awareness and promote involvement.

As Freedom from Hunger’s founder, Clifford E. Clinton, once remarked, “It may be said about our generation, ‘They did not fear the future because they did something about it.’” You, too, can do something about ending global hunger—for good. We hope you will join us in celebrating Freedom from Hunger Day.

In 1946, one man had the vision of ending world hunger. Clifford E. Clinton had been raised in China, where he saw people starve to death. He dreamed of a world without hunger and went to work to create that world.

Clinton formed an organization called Meals for Millions, which, in the 1960s, would join forces with an organization formed at the behest of President John F. Kennedy, the American Freedom from Hunger Foundation, founded to mobilize Americans to get involved in the Food and Agriculture Organization’s global Freedom from Hunger Campaign.

In 1979, the two organizations joined to form one organization—Freedom from Hunger. Today, we are celebrating 60 years of success, thanks to the visions of Clifford E. Clinton and John F. Kennedy. Drawing on their ideas, Freedom from Hunger is again hoping to mobilize the American people around its sustainable development efforts to end global hunger by holding the first-ever Freedom from Hunger Day, September 28.

The mission of the day is to increase American awareness of global hunger and poverty issues, while increasing public awareness and participation in Freedom from Hunger’s self-help efforts to end global hunger—for good.

For those in the Davis, California area, we will celebrate Freedom from Hunger Day and the organization’s 60th Anniversary with an Open House and festival from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 28 here at our International Center.

International food and craft vendors, a hunger awareness booth, world music and entertainment, interactive learning exhibits, tours of the facility, and opportunities to meet with our global partners are just some of the planned activities. We are asking everyone who supports our work to get involved. Buttons are being sold for a $1 donation, and employees of local businesses, including Bank of America, will wear them the week of September 25–28.
