Muhammad Yunus participates in organization’s panel about
Millennium Development Goals
Davis, CA, November 9, 2006 – Freedom from Hunger, a nonprofit,
international development organization today announced that Nobel Peace Prize
winner, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, and president of Freedom from Hunger, Dr. Christopher
Dunford, will be participating together in a panel at the upcoming Global Microcredit
Summit. The event is taking place in Halifax, Nova Scotia, November 12-15, 2006.
Dr. Dunford and Dr. Yunus
will speak in a panel discussion that addresses the subject of Dr. Dunford’s
paper commissioned by the Global Microcredit Summit entitled, “Microfinance’s
Contribution to Achieving the Millennium Development Goals.” This panel
will discuss the sustainable impact of microfinance on the very poor and the
potential for microfinance to do even more if the Summit goal of serving 100
million of the world’s poorest families is reached. Panelists will have
an opportunity to talk about the effect that microfinance has had in fulfilling
the Millennium Development Goals established by the United Nations. The eight
Millennium Development Goals with a target date of 2015 include reducing the
number of people living in extreme poverty, reducing child mortality, improving
maternal health and combating the spread of HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases.
Panelist discussion will
also focus on the value of directing microfinance services to the very poor
when so much attention is being given to microfinance services that invite commercial
capital and equity investments, which may well drive services away from the
very poor. Joining Dr. Dunford and Dr. Yunus on the panel is Carmen Velasco,
executive director of Pro Mujer, and Jonathan Morduch, a professor of public
policy and economics at New York University.
The “Ensuring Impact
Sustainably: Demonstrating Microfinance’s Contribution to Achieving the
Millennium Development Goals” panel at the Global Microcredit Summit (Workshop
Session #17) is taking place on Sunday, November 12 from 4:00 p.m. to 5:45 p.m.
AST.
