Freedom from Hunger Brings Work of
Nobel Prize Winner to the World
What:
Today,
the Nobel Peace Prize winner was announced. Muhammad Yunus pioneered a program
known as micro-credit that provides a self-help solution to the problem of poverty
in very poor countries.
Locally, an international development nonprofit called Freedom from Hunger,
provides a micro-credit program based on Mr. Yunus’ model. In fact, Mr.
Yunus sits on the Ambassadors Council for Freedom from Hunger. The nonprofit’s
President, Christopher Dunford, has known Mr. Yunus for many years and can comment
on his generosity toward other organizations as well as his willingness to mentor
those who wish to follow his example.
On November 12, at the Global MicroCredit Summit in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Dr.
Yunus will appear on a panel to discuss a major new paper by Freedom from Hunger’s
president, Christopher Dunford. The paper, “Microfinance’s Contribution
to Achieving the Millennium Development Goals” was commissioned by the
Summit organizers and presents a review of research that reviews microfinance’s
impacts and potential to do even more if it can reach its potential to serve
100 million people.
When:
From 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. today (Friday, October 13, 2006), Freedom from
Hunger staff are available for comment on the organization’s own approach
to micro-credit programs. Today, partners from around the world are visiting
the organization to develop new micro-credit services that further Yunus’
original vision of helping the poor help themselves. These international partners
are also available for comment.
